However, Zavala won't allow it, leaving the Guardian to do what must be done. The impact of the event permeated the Tower, breaking the Guardian's four year vow of silence, and stirring Ikora Rey to retaliate against the Awoken prince. The Guardian and Petra arrive too late, and Cayde dies in the Guardian's arms. This allows Uldren to appropriate the Vanguard leader's weapon, the Ace of Spades, and use it to deliver the final blow. Despite valiantly fighting off hordes of lesser Scorn, Cayde loses his Ghost, Sundance, and is subsequently crippled by the Scorn. While the Guardian is fighting their way through the Scorn to reach Cayde, he is ambushed by the Scorned Barons. As Cayde and the Guardian fight through the prison, they each encounter a mutated, undead Eliksni species known as the Scorn.
Upon doing so, the three split up to start quelling the freshly begun prison break.
